The Baltimore Orioles were supposed to be bad this season, that was known.
In a tough AL East, the Orioles were expected to be the worst team in the division and were expected to be closer to 100 losses than the playoffs. However, they have been a major surprise and are in the thick of the Wild Card race but when the trade deadline came around, Baltimore decided to sell, which was disappointing news for fans.
The Orioles traded Trey Mancini to Houston and Jorge Lopez to the Twins as both players are impact players and could’ve been a major help to them in this Wild Card race.
Keeping The window open?
After the deadline, Baltimore GM Mike Elias says he still has faith in this team, but wants to keep their competitive window open for years to come.
“While I’m super excited about 2022 and what’s ahead of us and our chances, we’re going to continue with the plan of building for a bright, long future in the American League East, and I think we’re right there,” Elias said after the deadline. “I think that it’s liftoff from here for this team…
“This is not something, obviously, where we’re putting all of our chips and all this work that we’ve been doing around the organization for the past 3 1/2, four years into the second half of 2022,” Elias later added. “This is a decade-long window that I think is opening up, and I couldn’t be more excited about it for Baltimore, for the Orioles, for these guys.”
Although Elias believes the team was able to keep their competitive window open, they traded two fan-favorites as well, and selling will give fans more of a reason to not show up to the ballpark and cheer on their team. Baltimore hasn’t been close to the playoffs in a while and they were getting hot at the right time, while in the AL East, they should’ve taken advanatge of a season when the Rays and Red Sox – as well as the Blue Jays to some extent – aren’t playing to their best.
Do The Orioles Still Have A Chance?
Baltimore is currently one game back of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card berth and is currently 7-3 in their last 10, showing that this team is already good, and adding would’ve been a benefit.
The Orioles are still playing hard but when teams like the Mariners and Rays made moves to get better – the two teams they are chasing – it is frustrating to be a fan of Baltimore. If the O’s keep playing how they are, they do still have a chance to make the playoffs but at this point, it does seem like they will miss out by a few games and who knows what would’ve happened if they bought at the deadline.
