Georgia Bulldogs clear cut No. 1 team

We are seven week into the college football season and to be fair it has not played out like many anticipated when the season began. This has been one of the most challenging seasons in the last 10 years as we enter the halfway mark with a total of 45 games lost by a ranked team in the AP top 25.

The Bearcats are looking like a team that could potentially earn the first group bid to earn a spot in the college football playoff.

The Georgia Bulldogs have easily made it clear that they are the best team in the country holding the No. 1 spot for two weeks now since Alabama lost to Texas A&M.

Clemson is on the outside looking in to earn a spot in the playoffs but still have a chance while another ACC opponent in the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are the only team without a loss in the conference.

As of now, there is no true Heisman front runner as surprising as that sounds no one player has really stood out. Spencer Rattler has lost the starting job at Oklahoma thanks to his lackluster play and Michigan and Michigan State sit atop the Big Ten with another month left to play.

National Championship Potential Preview

The Georgia Bulldogs have the most prolific defense in the country by far and it’s not even close. The quarterback play has been the only real knock on the Bulldogs this season but it looks like they are figuring out who their guy is.

They also feature one of the best rushing attacks in college football. This is the most complete team in the country by a wide margin and should be playing for a shot at a national championship in early January.

The Buckeyes have the ability to really overwhelm their matchups with a ton of very talented players but the team doesn’t sit on top of most lists. Not many teams have one playmaker on the roster let alone two like the Buckeyes do in Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. Treyveon Henderson is steadily emerging as the third option to complete the big three for this team.

There is still a long way to go for the Buckeyes to build on their resume and push their chance at making the playoffs. The Buckeyes have one of the most explosive offenses in the country and not many teams have the personnel to match them.

Two teams that might not make the college football playoff

Regardless of how good some of these other teams are and Georgia included even with that terrific offense, no team has more talent across the roster than the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban never fails to recruit high caliber players.

There is a chance though that we don’t see the Tide in the playoff come January. The SEC conference championship game should feature Georgia and Alabama and if the Bulldogs are to win that game Bama will be no better than 11-2 on the season.

This means they are less likely to make the playoffs. The only real chance they have is to win out and upset Georgia in the SEC title game.

We’ve seen this story many times over the last several years of college football. Another season where a team outside the Power 5 is looking to unbeaten and make the playoffs. Until the Selection committee gives us all a reason to believe it, don’t hold your breath on it.

When the first rankings are released for the playoff it’ll be interesting to see if the Bearcats are even in the top 5. This team should go undefeated the rest of the way as the schedule is pretty easy from here on out.

Can they play with Georgia and Alabama? Only real way we will find out is if the committee decides to just put them in.
